New best story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users

Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users 530 by mrkurt | 220 comments on Hacker News. Hello Hacker News! We're Kurt, Jerome, and Michael from fly.io ( https://fly.io/ ). We're building a platform to run Docker applications close to end users. It's kind of like a content delivery network, but for backend servers. I helped build Ars Technica and spent the majority of my time trying to make the site fast. We used a content delivery network to cache static content close to anonymous readers and it worked very well for them. But the most valuable readers were not these, but the ones who paid for subscriptions. They wanted personalized content and features for interacting with the community – and we couldn't make those fast. Content delivery networks don't work for Ars Technica's best customers. Running Docker apps close to users helps get past the "slow" speed of light. Most interactions with an app server seem slow because of

New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Have you been laid off?

Ask HN: Have you been laid off? 535 by Peretus | 404 comments on Hacker News. I work remotely as a front-end developer at a VC-funded, series B startup. Funding has dried up as investors with financial exposure to anything retail or entertainment-related are hemorrhaging cash. The company leadership told us that starting immediately, all employees (including the fully-remote workers like myself) are on mandatory unpaid leave. Job cuts in 2019 were already up a whopping 351% from the previous year[1]. Considering the COVID-19 outbreak, I'm concerned that many other tech workers like me might be updating their resumes and entering a stagnant job market. Alternatively, organizations may view this as a great time to gain additional market share. What do you think? If you're a tech worker, have you been laid off or do you expect to be laid off soon? If you are a hiring manager, what is the current hiring status at your company? [1] https://ift.tt/2xK1zwt

New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?

Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius? 419 by TheAlchemist | 614 comments on Hacker News. While virtually all countries adopt the lockdown strategy to eliminate the virus spread, UK is apparently going on with 'herd immunity' strategy. It's pretty well explained in this tweet: https://twitter.com/iandonald_psych/status/12385183716516495... Basically, the idea is to get the young infected, as the virus seems to be relatively inoffensive for young people, and thus becoming immune. Once the country reach a threshold percentage of immune population, the virus cannot spread effectively anymore, hence protecting the vulnerable ones. My gut feeling is that this is the rational thing to do, however only in theory. In practice, people won't be disciplined about isolating vulnerable ones in the first phase, thus leading to disaster.

New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Good ways to capture institutional knowledge?

Ask HN: Good ways to capture institutional knowledge? 437 by alhirzel | 185 comments on Hacker News. Successful companies institutionalize the knowledge of their employees; this leads to better continuity and faster on-boarding. Things like huge monorepos of useful code, internal tools, process manuals, etc. are example products of this. Young companies tend to depend on the dedication and talent of key individuals, and in maturation, must somehow make the jump to institutionalized knowledge (so that "if someone got hit by a bus" things are ok). What are some successful methods you have used or seen used to accomplish this transition? What are problems you faced (skeptics, opponents, etc.)? I am involved with an organization that is slowly growing, is about to lose key personnel, and is looking to prepare.
